Voles

Identifying Voles

  • Two to five inches in length
  • Fur is brown or gray; often mistaken for a mouse
  • Short tail – about half the length of a mouse tail
  • Small eyes and ears
  • Most commonly discovered in spring when a vein-like system of dead grass is revealed after the snow melts
  • Eats the root system of plants, trees, shrubs, vines and vegetables.
  • Not commonly seen due to the tunnel systems they inhabit
  • Reproduction begins at three weeks of age with a 21-day gestation period
  • Multiple litters per year, with five to 10 young per litter
