Vole

What is a Vole?vole on rocks

  • 2 – 5 inches in length
  • Fur is brown or grey, often mistaken for a mouse
  • Short tail, about ½ the length of a mouse tail
  • Small eyes and ears
  • Most commonly discovered in spring when a vein-like system of dead grass is revealed after the snow melts
  • Eats the root system of plants, trees, shrubs, vines and vegetables.
  • Not commonly seen due to the tunnel systems they inhabit
  • Reproduction begins at 3 weeks of age, 21 day gestation period with litters of 5 – 10
  • Multiple litters per year
